What Are Blog Categories?

What Are Blog Categories?

When you first get started blogging, everything seems super straightforward. You build a quick website and start posting! However, the longer you blog and the more serious you get about it, the more you realize that details matter. Things like SEO (search engine optimization), branding, and organization matter BIG TIME!

What we want to discuss today is that last piece: organization. If your website is laid out in a way that’s super user-friendly and accessible, you’re going to see bigger gain. Organizing your blog post topics by category can be helpful for both readers and writers! Readers can easily find the content they’re looking for and you, as a writer, can use special landing pages to direct visitors right to the content they’ll connect with the most. The better the blog posts are suited for the reader, the longer they’ll hang on your website. Longer visits, multiple pageviews, and more engagement means SEO boosts and big brand growth for you!

As you can see, web design can have a huge impact on your blog’s success. So, today, we’re going to be breaking down how to use and create categories to organize your content. Here’s what you need to know about blog categories:

What Are Blog Categories?

What Are Blog Categories?

Blog categories are simply grouping of blog posts with the same theme or topic. You can create a category page for each topic and make that accessible on your main menu. Visitors jump on your blog and can easily find the category they’re looking for by choosing a topic at the top of the page. It makes it SO easy for readers to navigate your website! Plus, you’ll enjoy how tidy everything feels!

Though blog categories are super important once you start accumulating a lot of posts, we don’t recommend it from the beginning if you’re only posting once a week. Only having one or two posts in each category could make your blog feel unfinished or inactive. So, wait until you have enough blog posts to put at least 4-5 articles into each group. You can, however, plan for these categories from the beginning and build out your first content calendar to ensure there’s enough variety to fill every category with plenty of content!

how to choose blog categories

How To Choose Blog Categories

Step 1: Research the competition.

First, look at other blogs in your niche and look at their category listings. It may give you some inspiration for what to put on your own blog! At the very least, it’ll show what your target audience may be expecting when they enter your site. Write down what you do and don’t like about their categories.

Step 2: Consider your target audience.

Next, think about your specific target audience and how it differs from the competition you just researched. Ask yourself what would be valuable to those readers. It might be something not offered by others in your niche!

Step 3: List the topics you most often write about.

Now, it’s time to start really nailing down your topics! Start by making a list of all the blog posts you’ve written. Then, note what each post is about. Don’t overthink it. This is just to get a sense of what topics are naturally coming up when you’re writing blog posts!

Step 4: Consolidate those topics into example categories.

Once you have the topics listed out, broadly group your posts by theme. When you see similar themes, consolidate them together and try to organize all your content into 3-5 main categories. Name each category using only 1-3 words max, so it’s easy to add the topic to your main menu.

Step 5: Include SEO keywords where possible.

As mentioned, all your categories should have a short title, but where it’s natural, try to include SEO keywords. Keywords are phrases or words that are often included in searches your target audience makes on Google or other search engines. The goal is for your content to populate at the top of the search engine results pages, so your blog has higher visibility. With more visibility comes more visits and followers!

Step 6: Refine your categories again.

Take a lot at the number of categories you currently have and see if you can cut it down further. Make sure you have a lot of posts for every topic. If you don’t, consider consolidating a couple topics together. For example, maybe you currently have different categories for “marriage,” “parenting,” and “home,” but they could both be put together under a category called “family” or “lifestyle.” Refine your categories so each one has plenty of blog posts!

Step 7: Add categories, create landing pages, and edit the menu.

Now it’s time to add those categories to your blog! Here’s how to add categories to WordPress. Beyond just creating the categories and selecting the topic, each topic will need to be easily accessible via your navigation bar. All the buttons and dropdowns should lead to your category landing pages that feature curated blog posts and overall experience suited to the content and its unique readership!

Doing this is not only useful for blog organization and SEO, but it’s also good for social media marketing efforts! If you post about something related to the food side of your blog, the link you provide should be bringing people right to the recipe category on your blog. That way, visitors can be fed the exact content they’re looking for without having to search, which will give you more time to sell them on how awesome your blog is!

Step 8: Test it out!

That’s it! All that’s left to do is track the performances of your created categories. How does each section benefit your blog? Are readers showing interest in another category? Continue to edit, refine, and archive pages as you see fit until you find the best strategy!

Bonus: If you want to further organize your content. Add categories and tags. Basically, the category is the overall theme, whereas tags represent subgroups. You can easily add both to your editing/uploading process using a WordPress plugin like TaxoPress or Cool Tag Cloud
