Marketing is a lot of work and it can be really expensive. Luckily, SEO is the perfect solution! If you can increase your website traffic, you can get in front of more potential clients and sell them on your life-changing program. To help you get started, we’re dedicating our post today to SEO for your coaching business!

The goal is when potential clients Google words related to your niche (like “fitness coaching in LA”), your business pops up near the top! Overall the other coaches, your website shows up on that first page of results–making it way more likely to get clicked on. If this happens, you’ll get a lot of organic traffic you can hopefully convert into sales!

So, understanding SEO is essential for your brand’s growth!

What is SEO and How it Works

What Is SEO and How It Works

Search engine optimization is a marketing strategy where you format and compose your online content for search engine algorithms. When you intentionally construct your website and content with SEO in mind, your web pages will rank near the top of the search engine results pages across lots of keywords.

This means more people searching for your services (or content related to your services) will find your website, become a follower, and hopefully get more conversions! SEO works for coaches so well, because it passively draws in more visitors than social media and email marketing, but with much less effort. It’s like the ultimate hack for small biz growth!!

Step-by-Step SEO Guide

Step 1: Perform an SEO audit.

Before you can work on improving your SEO, you need to figure out where you are now. Use a free SEO tool like our SEO Site Audit resource that gives you an idea of your SEO strengths and weaknesses.

Step 2: Optimize your website copy and meta descriptions.

Optimizing your coaching website starts with optimizing your web page copy and meta descriptions. Your copy should be in short paragraphs and concise sentences. And, it should have specific keywords woven throughout the text.

Then, you need to edit the title tag and meta descriptions in a way that accurately represents your page and entices people to click. Again, include keywords where you can!

Step 3: Add ALT text to all images.

Images on your website are good for SEO. But, to make them great for SEO, add alt text. Alt text is a written description of an image within its code. It makes the content accessible to the visually impaired, and it makes your visual content more easily translatable by Google. This boosts your SEO!

Not exactly sure where to start on this one? Here’s more on all things alt text!

Step 4: Do a speed test on your website.

Slow website speeds are one of the main reasons for a high bounce rate. Website visitors are much more likely to stay if your website loads within just a couple of seconds. Start with a speed test to know what you’re working with!

Step 5: Ensure your web design is eye-catching and easy to navigate.

Web design is important when it comes to SEO. If your website is intuitively designed, visitors are more likely to stick around for a while. Google will see this as a possessive and raise your rank!

For good web design, you need to have an eye-catching landing page and an easy-to-navigate menu. Oh, and definitely get a search bar too!

Step 6: Update old pages and delete duplicate pages.

If you have old pages or duplicate pages on your site, they could be hindering your SEO. Update old pages to make them relevant and keyword-rich. Delete and duplicate or dead pages, and make sure the title tags and meta descriptions are unique, accurate, and optimized too!

Step 7: Enhance your website security.

Google and other search engines will mark websites without an SSL certificate as “unsafe.” Most followers aren’t going to risk traveling to an unsafe website!

Ensure you have an SSL certificate to protect your visitor’s data!

Step 8: Add keywords and optimized titles to your online courses.

If you’re a coach, you probably have online courses or are thinking about it! Do some keyword research and add your target keywords to your course copy, titles, and meta descriptions.

Remember, keywords are search terms visitors are using. If you want internet users to find the content, it needs to be optimized!

Step 9: Add content your clients would value.

Spend some time brainstorming what your clients might value as additional content beyond your coaching services. Consider both current clients and ideal clients, and then create content that fits your niche!

Offering things like blogs, books, printables, products, courses, quizzes, memberships, and more allows you to diversify your traffic, make your coaching blog more engaging, and level up your SEO marketing game!

Step 10: Include a strong call to action.

You want to get visitor’s info as soon as possible when they get to your site. That way, if they’re not sold right away, you can have more time to convert them using email marketing. Add a call-to-action to your site that’ll offer your reader a freebie in exchange for their contact info!

SEO for Coaches a Step-By-Step Guide

Step 11: Start a blog.

The number one way to improve your site’s search engine optimization is by starting a blog. No matter your niche, blogging is possible, and potential and current clients alike will be eager to hear what you have to say. Plus, every time you upload a new blog post, you provide more opportunities for high web page ranking across lots of different keywords.

Here’s more on why blogging is important for all businesses! If that finally sells you on the idea, but you’re not into writing—no problem! Outsource your blog writing instead. However, here are some basics of creating SEO blog posts:

Decide your regular posting schedule.

How often will you post? We recommend 1-5 times per week to see real growth. Whatever you do, make sure it’s consistent for SEO!

Create a content calendar.

Deciding what to write every week can be harder than you think. Create a content calendar to plan out your future blog posts.

Write optimized, keyword-rich posts.

Now, it’s time to write SEO-friendly blog posts. Do this by keeping paragraphs and sentences short, including SEO keywords, organizing the text into subheadings, adding internal and external links, and getting the content length just right.

Add optimized images.

Add optimized images—that means compressed size (for better loading speed) and alt text!

Upload and share posts.

Finally, upload your post and share it on all your social interactions. Soon, it’ll probably be ranking at the top of the SERPs!

Step 12: Track your insights on Google Analytics.

We threw a lot at you here. Regardless of what steps you take, track your progress using Google Analytics! It’ll show you the increased traffic from your new SEO strategy and inform you of anything that’s not jiving as well as you hoped.

BONUS Step 13: Expand your social media presence.

If you’re already managing one major social account, congrats! Beyond basic site SEO–social media and SEO go hand-in-hand, since traffic helps drive SEO and social media drives traffic. Consider adding a couple more platforms. Remember to think about where your target audience is currently hanging out!

BONUS Step 14: Consider other monetization opportunities.

What’s the goal of investing in your SEO? Hopefully, it’s to make some cold hard cash! So, it’s good to diversify your profits. Think about more ways you can monetize your business, whether that’s through affiliate marketing and brand collaborations or ad space and products. Even cheap printables can bring in a lot of passive income!
