How to Write SEO-Friendly Blog Posts

writing seo friendly blog posts

If you run a blog, there is nothing more important to your brand than your weekly post uploads! This content is what draws your readers in post after post! These readers share your articles, engage with you on socials, respond to your CTAs, and, at the end of the day, help you profit from your blog!

But, we all know blog posts are a lot of work. No matter what tools you use, crafting the perfect articles takes lots of time and effort so you want to make the most out of this content! Your blog posts should be the primary drive of your brand growth. But, in order to make your posts as effective as possible, you have to know a thing or two about SEO.

SEO is search engine optimization, and it refers to the process of formatting and writing blog posts to rank high on search engine results pages. Basically, if an internet user searches “How to Style an LBD” and that’s exactly what your post is about, you want them to see your article recommended at the top of the page. Because, if your post is in one of those top slots, the user is more likely to click it, read it, and become a lifelong follower.

With SEO, you’ll manipulate search engine algorithms to (correctly) identify your post as being the most valuable for a given search term or phrase. If it sounds complicated . . . well, it can be. It’s always best to hire SEO experts, but there are lots of ways you can search engine optimize all on your own, too! And, that’s what our post is on today! We’re delivering a step-by-step guide to creating optimized blog posts that boost your visibility and make your blog the next big thing.

Here’s how to do it:

How to Write SEO-Friendly Blog Posts

How to Write SEO-Friendly Blog Posts

Have a good understanding of your brand voice, message, and goals.

First of all, to write an SEO-friendly blog post, you need to have a good understanding of your long-term vision. All your blog posts should be motivated to further your voice, message, and goals. Ensure that you know exactly what the vibe and mission of your blog post will be before you even brainstorm ideas.

Plan and think through your content.

The number one priority when you create content for your blog is to make it something worthy of being read. Above all else, search engine web crawlers are looking for high-quality content! To confirm your posts are always the best of the best, plan out what you’re going to write about in advance and consider exactly how it’ll be beneficial to your reader and brand goals.

Ask yourself how you can make your content evergreen and relevant.

Once you get your blog post idea, ask yourself if your content is evergreen and relevant. Basically, will the post be useful months and years after you write it while also being trendy for your reader today? That’s what it’s all about! Try to make your posts valuable for readers now and later.

Do keyword research.

Even if you don’t know much about SEO, you probably know the importance of keywords! Keywords are search terms that can link an internet user to your content. You need your target keywords ready to go, so you can naturally integrate them into your content as you write.

You can find keywords on Google Keyword Planner, Semrush, or Moz Keyword Explorer. Just don’t go crazy! Search engines will identify keyword stuffing as an SEO detractor. So, only include them where it feels organic!

Outline your post with clear structure.

Now, it’s finally time to outline your post! Structure the post, so that it’s super well-organized and easy to read. When you’re writing a post, readability is one of THE most important things. So, lay out exactly how you’ll lay out the information for your readers.

Use subheadings, bullet lists, and numbers for organization.

Speaking of organization: subheadings, bullet lists, and numbers are great ways to boost your readability! Put all your outline titles or topic shifts in subheadings first. This is a good idea because studies show that blog posts with subheadings 2-6 rank higher than posts using only 1-3. So, use all of your available subheadings if you’re on WordPress!

Then, throughout your posts, take advantage of opportunities to use lists! Bullet points and numbers are great for readability for anyone looking for quick answers from your post. You can add all of this during the writing process, and usually everything will copy and paste accurately into WordPress!

Be mindful of content length.

Content that’s too short could be seen as low-quality. It looks to web crawlers like you didn’t put much thought into the post, therefore, it’s not valuable. However, content that is too long can seem like you’re overselling and trying too hard to include keywords or add more content. This also makes web crawlers suspicious of the quality of your content. So, never have your post be fewer than 300 words or more than 5,000. The best content length range? Between 1,500 – 2,500.

When writing blog posts for SEO, also consider the amount of text below each subheading. It’s recommended that there be no more than 300 words under each subheading for readability. So, double check each subheading when you’re finished and cut it into more parts if needed!

Include your current calls-to-action.

What are you trying to get your readers to do? Purchase from affiliate links? Give you their contact info? Buy your products? Book your services? Follow you on socials? Whatever it is, make sure you’re driving that CTA throughout the post in an organic but effective way.

Obvi, this is good for you, but how is this good for SEO? It can help you engage readers and keep them on your site. The more visits they have and the longer the pageviews, the more evidence that your website is content-rich and high-quality. If it has regular visitors that stay for a while, the blog posts must be great!

Now sure about CTAs? Here’s more on how to craft the perfect call-to-action

Add plenty of external and internal links.

Adding links to your blog posts is beneficial for SEO, because they show web crawlers that your content is authoritative and carefully crafted. External links are links you add to your blog post from other credible web pages outside of your blog. These shouldn’t be competitors, but links that provide something additional for your reader.

Maybe you mention meal prep containers in a recipe post and link to your fave lidded glassware on Amazon? Or, maybe you’re writing about seasonal depression and links to a PubMed article highlighting a study you reference? Those are ways you can add helpful and SEO-boosting external links.

Internal linking, on the other hand, is when you link to other pages on your own website. This helps keep readers on your website as they view webpage after webpage as they explore your blog. The linking combined with the longer pageviews is a big SEO boost! Linking is one of our favorite SEO tools! (Make sure you have all links open in a new tab!)

Consider engaging multimedia elements.

Non text-based content like photos, videos, social media streams, widgets, and more embedded into your posts can also be effective for boosting SEO! Add at least 4 images to every blog post (and make sure those images are high-quality too) and include plenty of extras if you have them. These multimedia elements make your post super engaging, easy to read, and helpful! Don’t go overboard, but take your readers on a serious multimedia journey.

Give your post an eye-catching title.

Now that everything is written and composed, it’s time to finally title this beast! This can be super hard, not just because it needs to clearly represent your content, but it needs to be optimized, too! Try to craft a title that’s about 60 characters and/or between 8-14 words. You’ll also get a boost if the title includes numbers, stats, keywords, extra punctuation, and language that matches your target audience.

Here’s more on creating the perfect blog post title

Make everything accessible.

Web crawlers like it when your content can be read by all this includes the visually impaired! Go back through your post and add ALT text and title attribute to your multimedia content. This way, if they can’t see the added content, they can still experience it and interpret it within the post’s context.

As a bonus, adding alt text and title tags also help web crawlers better understand your visual content to determine if it’s relevant to your post. With more relevant, high-quality content added to the post, up goes your SEO!

Edit URL structure and metadata.

Your URL or web address is key. It’ll make navigation easier for readers and further help web crawlers digest your content. When creating the perfect URL, keep it really simple. Divide words with hyphens and don’t include dates, numbers, random characters, or any additional words that don’t add much to the base concept.

Another type of data to edit before finishing up your blog post is editing the meta description and title tag. Google will just auto-generate something if you don’t write one, so you might as well optimize with keywords and engage future readers with your voice. You should have custom metadata on all pages on your website!

Always keep your audience in mind.

At the end of the day, remember that you’re writing blog posts for your audience, not search engine web crawlers. Keep your content authentic and not overworked. Because even if your post is perfectly optimized, it won’t matter if no one reads it!

Market the post on socials and add sharing buttons.

To get more traffic to the site from the start (remember, traffic is good for SEO!), share your posts on social media. You can also add sharing buttons to your blog itself, so organic visitors can post your content on Instagram, Pinterest, Facebook, and more!

Monitor the post long-term and update when needed.

Now, just watch and see what happens! As you get better at optimizing, you’ll see your posts rise through the ranks and finally hit those coveted number one spots on Google. Once you’re up there, the gains will be huge!
