What are Internal Links in WordPress?
Simply put, internal links are links to your own website. So, an internal hyperlink in a blog post will take the reader to another web page on your blog. This means an external link would mean the readers were getting sent to another website! Make sense? Pretty simple!
How to Add Internal Links in WordPress
Step 1: Find your post or page.
If you want to add an internal link to your blog, first find the post or page on your website that needs the link. You can access this by going to your WordPress dashboard, locating Pages or Posts on the left-hand side, and then navigating to your desired text.
Step 2: Highlight the anchor text.
Highlight the text you want the link added to. Just highlight it, no pasting. We want to add a hyperlink, remember, which means the link is embedded into some anchor text rather than laid out with the web address and all. This makes internal linking way more natural and user-friendly!
Step 3 Click the Link icon.
Next, click the Link button, which looks like a little chainlink. It’ll appear in a small pop-up above the highlighted anchor text. When you click it, a small window should pop up with space for a URL.
Step 4: Search your page or paste the URL.
Now, find your link. You can do this in two ways. First, just navigate to the web page in another tab and copy and paste the link into the box available. Easy peasy.
However, WordPress also allows you to use this box to search pages on your site to find the exact post or page you’re looking for fast, without needing another tab or browser. Once you find it in the search, just click to add the link!
Step 5: Select Open in a new tab.
After you insert the link, click the Open in new tab toggle to turn on that feature. You always want to open it in a new tab, because you don’t want to move your visitors off your blog post and onto something else. You don’t know if they’re done reading!
When the link opens in a new tab, the users can jump to that next post or page after they’re done reading the current content. This better reflects how users will actually use your website!
Step 6: Press Enter.
Once you’ve added the link and selected the option to open the page in a new tab, hit Enter. Your anchor text will turn blue, and you’ll know that your internal link is set!
Tips for Adding Internal Links in WordPress
Make internal links “follow” links.
There are two ways to set up internal links, no-follow and follow links. It basically determines whether or not Google recognizes your internal link and indexes it. You want this because it’ll help boost your SEO across multiple pages. Your links in WordPress will automatically be “follow” links, so you don’t need to select anything!
Don’t link stuff.
