how is social media monetized

How Is Social Media Monetized?

Monetization on social media is the process of turning your impressive content and influence into a reliable source of income. Some channels are directly monetizable, as in, you’re paid directly by the social platform. Other platforms, though, allow you to build an audience and earn money indirectly. Let’s look at both options:

Direct Social Media Monetization

There are some social media platforms that will directly pay you through their channel based on factors like engagement and follower count. The companies make more money off of content creators who bring in a lot of traffic, so they incentivize influencers to stay on their platform by giving them a portion of that profit.

Channels like YouTube, Twitch, TikTok, Facebook, and X (Twitter) give creators money through avenues like ad views, memberships/subscriptions, donations, and virtual currency during live streams. This revenue can then be managed directly on the platform via your profile. This is a convenient way of earning, but often it requires a significant amount of engagement and followers to qualify and continuously make money.

Indirect Social Media Monetization

Though direct monetization models are great for content creators, the opportunity to indirectly monetize your social channels can sometimes be even more lucrative! Once you have a significant amount of influence (AKA followers and engagement) you can make money off that audience in a few ways:

  • Affiliate Marketing: Affiliate marketing is when an influencer or content creator promotes a product on their profile using a special link. Every time that link is clicked or a purchase is made through that link, the creator gets a commission from the company. Here’s more on affiliate marketing!
  • Brand Collaborations: When a creator gets enough influence, a company will directly pay them to make posts on their profile promoting the brand’s products or services. They may ask the influencer to post reels, videos, carousels, or just a photo. You can learn more about how brand sponsorships work HERE
  • Produce or Service Sales: An influencer can promote physical products, digital products, and services on their social media and generate sales from their audience there.
  • Memberships/Subscriptions: Membership/subscription plans are a popular way for creators to monetize their social content. They charge their followers a monthly fee to get exclusive access to digital content otherwise unavailable to the general public. Third party platforms like Patreon make this easy for creators to do!
  • Website Ad Revenue: On some social channels, the platform will pay influencers for ads displayed on their content. However, some won’t. They can still make money on ads, though, by getting social viewers to travel to their website, increasing the organic traffic, and boosting ad revenue potential.
what is the highest paying social media platform

What Is The Highest Paying Social Media Platform?

Pinterest

Pinterest is one of the highest-paying platforms for content creators, especially in the world of lifestyle, fashion, home decor, and DIY. Pinterest’s unique visual search engine allows content creators to earn passive income by monetizing their pins via affiliate marketing, ad revenue, and sponsored content.

As of 2024, Pinterest has around 500 million monthly active users. The platform is full of users who are actively searching for products, inspo, and ideas, making it the perfect place to reach customers in a purchasing mindset. Basically, Pinterest leads CONVERT. These social users are eager to take action and with a smaller pool of users and content as well as a more niche market, monetizing an audience couldn’t be easier!

It stands out because it functions as a visual search engine as opposed to a traditional social network. An influencer can optimize their Pinterest content to reach their target audience much easier than a lot of other platforms, which is why we consider Pinterset to be one of the best paying platforms. All of Pinterset revenue is indirect through affiliate marketing, brand partnerships, digital products, website ad revenue, etc.

YouTube

YouTube is one of the largest platforms out there with around 2.6 billion monthly active users. It’s a solid choice for content creators because it has some of the best direct revenue streams of any social platform!

Creators on YouTube usually earn the majority of their income from ads, with CPM (cost per millie [thousand view]) rates ranging from $0.25 – $30 per 1,000 views. This can depend on different factors such as niche, location, and audience demographics. Basically, if a creator’s type of content and audience is in high advertiser demand, they’ll make more. If it’s not, they’ll make less.

In addition to ads, creators can also choose to monetize through channel memberships and super chats. Payments can vary based on factors including video length, engagement, and your niche, just like with a CPM rate. Of course, YouTube can also be a good driver of indirect revenue for content creators via affiliate marketing, brand sponsorships, and merch sales!

The only downside is actually the massive size of YouTube, the wide audience base, and the difficulty of optimizing video content. It can be difficult to stand-out among the vast sea of creators to find your audience and qualify for monetization, which is why we think Pinterset all around is a better platform for bigger payouts!

Instagram

Instagram has become an absolute powerhouse for content creators, especially those in niches like lifestyle, beauty, fashion, and food. With over 2 billion active users as of 2024, the platform offers heaps of opportunities for creators to connect with their target audience and other brands.

Monetization on Instagram comes from indirect means like sponsored posts, affiliate marketing, and digital product/service sales. However, Instagram offers monetization options directly too: When a creator uploads IGTV videos, they get 55% of any ad revenue generated on that content. Instagram doesn’t offer payout per view, but this is still pretty good for a social media platform!

Additionally, if the creator hosts Instagram lives with at least 10k followers, they can sell badges to viewers for a real profit. Lastly, Instagram has their own affiliate marketing platform if you’d rather not go with a third party platform! So, there are a number of ways to earn money on Insta.

TikTok

TikTok has HUGELY exploded in popularity, especially among younger audiences, with almost 2 billion monthly active users worldwide. Its unique algorithm, which prioritizes engagement over follower count, allows even the smallest of creators to go viral, making it a super attractive platform for newer content creators.

TikTok’s monetization model includes the Creator Fund, which pays creators based on video views and engagement, with CPM rates typically ranging anywhere from $0.50 to $16.00 per 1,000 views, with the average sitting around $9.16.

Creators also earn on live streams via video gifts, where their viewers send virtual gifts that can be converted to real money. This is in-addition to the CPM payout! Additionally, TikTok Shop allows influencers to open an integrated e-commerce store with their affiliate products or personal products to sell. It’s a handy way to earn additional income as a TikTok creator without having to utilize a third-party platform!

Of course, TikTok is also a good place to monetize indirectly through brand sponsorships, website ad revenue, memberships, etc. If you can handle the demand of producing LOTS of high-quality viral content every day, TikTok can be a lucrative platform for influencers and content creators!

Facebook

Facebook remains one of the largest platforms for content creators, with over 3 billion active monthly users as of 2024. While it has seen a decline in the younger generation users, it still offers significant earning potential, particularly for creators targeting people over 30. Facebook’s monetization opportunities include ad revenue through in-stream video ads, Facebook Marketplace, and fan subscriptions.

This platform also allows creators to earn through its Ad Revenue Sharing program, which pays creators based on video views and ad engagement. CPM rates on Facebook can range from $1 to $10, depending on the content’s reach, engagement, and the location of the audience.

Beyond the handful of direct ways a creator can earn on Facebook, the indirect ways someone can earn on Facebook usually prove to be more lucrative. Facebook Groups specifically are great for building niche communities that convert, helping content creators make lots on affiliate sales, products and services, brand sponsorships, memberships, and more!

What Platform Pays The Most For Views?

When it comes to purely getting paid for views, YouTube is still king!

Thanks to the YouTube Partner Program, creators can earn from streams ads, mid-roll ads, display ads, channel memberships, Super Chats, and Super Thanks. Once you become one of YouTube’s eligible creators, your content can start generating income on autopilot, which is why YouTube is considered one of the strongest long term platforms for sustainable earnings.

On average, YouTube CPMs (cost per 1,000 views) can range anywhere from $0.25 to $30+, depending on your niche, audience location, and advertiser demand. Finance, business, tech, and education niches tend to pay significantly higher than entertainment or lifestyle content at this point in time.

While TikTok does pay for views through its Creator Rewards Program (which replaced the old Creator Fund), payouts are still quite a bit lower and less predictable than YouTube. While viral TikToks can generate quick bursts of income, it’s much harder to build consistent, scalable revenue from views alone on this platform.

As for Facebook, it also pays for views through streams ads and in-stream ads, but again, the payouts tend to be lower and heavily dependent on audience location and watch time. So basically, if your main goal is to earn directly from views, YouTube wins. If your goal is to earn from conversions, sales, and influence, platforms like Pinterest and Instagram are far more suitable.

How Many Followers Do You Need To Make Money?

This is where a lot of people get pleasantly surprised… You don’t actually need a massive following to start making money. Here’s a rough breakdown of what you can expect:

  • Affiliate marketing: You can start with as little as 500–1,000 engaged followers.
  • Brand deals: Many brands now work with micro-influencers (1k–10k followers) because they often convert better than influencers with astronomical followers.
  • YouTube Partner Program: 1,000 subscribers + 4,000 watch hours (or 10M Shorts views in 90 days).
  • TikTok Creator Rewards Program: 10,000 followers + 100,000 views in 30 days.
  • Instagram badges & subscriptions: 10,000 followers.
  • Facebook monetization: Varies by feature, but it’s most often 5k–10k followers.

The key word here is ENGAGED. A creator with 3,000 loyal, niche followers can often make way more money than someone with 50,000 random followers that don’t ever engage with the person directly. Brands care more about trust, not just numbers, which is why smaller creators are landing brand deals more easily than ever before. Nowadays, it’s about quality over quantity more than ever before.

How Do You Make Money On Social Media?

There are two main ways to make money on social media: direct monetisation and indirect monetization.

First of all, let’s check out the direct ways to make money. These are paid by the platform itself:

  • YouTube Partner Program (ad revenue, stream ads, Super Chats, memberships)
  • Instagram bonuses and badges
  • Facebook in-stream ads and bonus program
  • TikTok Creator Rewards Program
  • Twitch subscriptions and bits

They usually require you to be one of the platform’s eligible creators, and you have to hit specific metrics.

Now, the indirect ways to make money. This is usually where the real money comes from:

  • Brand deals (sponsored posts, long-term partnerships, UGC)
  • Driving traffic to your blog or website for ad revenue
  • Affiliate marketing
  • Selling your own products or services
  • Memberships and subscriptions

Most high-earning creators rely on indirect monetisation more than anything because it’s scalable, more flexible, and more sustainable long-term.

Pinterest is the premier social media platform!

The bottom line is that each social media platform out there will offer unique opportunities for content creators to earn, depending on the influencer’s audience, niche, and content style. However, our all-time favorite is Pinterest, for all the reasons we spoke about above and more.

However, none of these options are as lucrative as search engine optimized blogging. You can learn more about that in our post on social media vs SEO. But, if you really want to start earning, contact us and we’ll tell you how to take your blog to the top!
